EV charging · 3 min read
Will your consumer unit need upgrading before an EV charger?
Why some installs need a new fuse box, and how to tell from a photo.

An EV charger needs its own protected circuit. Whether your current consumer unit can take that depends on its age, condition and spare capacity.
Signs you'll need an upgrade
- It has old rewireable fuses
- It's plastic and fitted before 2016
- There's no RCD protection
- Every way is already used
Sometimes we can fit a small separate enclosure for the charger instead of replacing the whole board. We'll always offer the cheapest safe option.
Send us a photo of your consumer unit when you price a charger and we'll tell you for free.
