10 signs you need a new boiler
Most boilers give you plenty of warning before they give up. Here's what to look out for.

Boilers rarely fail without warning. If you spot two or three of these, it's worth getting a price for a replacement before the cold weather rather than during a breakdown.
- It's more than 12 to 15 years old.
- You're calling out an engineer more than once a year.
- Parts are getting hard to find, or the manufacturer no longer makes them.
- The flame is yellow or orange instead of crisp blue.
- There's a sooty mark or a smell around the boiler.
- Your gas bills keep going up even though you use it the same.
- It's noisy: banging, gurgling or whistling (often called kettling).
- It keeps losing pressure.
- Radiators take ages to warm up.
- The hot water runs hot and cold.
What a new boiler could save
An A-rated condensing boiler turns over 90% of its gas into heat. Upgrade from an old G-rated one in a detached home and the Energy Saving Trust estimate is up to £840 a year.
